For the third time in four seasons, a Maryland public school finishes on top of The Post’s high school football rankings. In 2014, it was Douglass. In 2015, it was Damascus. And now, undefeated Wise is No. 1 at season’s end.
In September, Washington Catholic Athletic Conference champion St. John’s, The Post’s No. 2 team, lost to California schools St. John Bosco, which lost a state semifinal to Mater Dei, and De La Salle, which faces Mater Dei for the state championship this weekend. A two-loss team has finished No. 1 in our rankings just once since 1992 (Good Counsel in 2010).
At Hampton University on Sunday, Tuscarora and Westfield played for Virginia state titles. In Class 5, Richmond-area school Highland Springs won its third straight title game against a Loudoun County opponent. After wins against Stone Bridge in 2015 and 2016, the Springers beat Tuscarora, 40-27. In the final game of the season, Westfield won, 28-21, against Chesapeake's Oscar Smith in Class 6. The Bulldogs remain at No. 4 behind Damascus; both teams went undefeated and won a third straight state title.
